What is a Smartphone

A mobile is said to be smartphone if it contains certain advanced features which are not there on a standard cell phone. It offers more advanced computing ability and connectivity as compared to a basic cell phone or a feature phone. One of the most important features that make these phones different is the working of these phones. Smartphones are based on an operating system (an example of application software) just like any personal computer. This gives smartphones a bigger distinction as operating system can perform a number of tasks which are not feasible in an ordinary feature phone. With the help of operating system, the installation of a number application on the smartphones is possible which helps in making life of a user easier.Smartphone is a high end mobile phone but due to the growing competition in the market it gives the people the benefit to purchase them at a very reasonable price. Smartphones are the combination of a PDA (Personal Data Assistant) and that of the standard communication device i.e. a phone. The specification requirements of smartphones vary between manufacturers but the smartphones have a number of key features which includes: email service, web browser, Wi-Fi, synchronization, camera etc…

Due to these features it is also referred to as a handheld computer integrated within a mobile telephone. Most of these phones runs applications based on platforms such as Java ME but a smartphone allows its users to install and run more advanced applications based on a specific platform. A smartphone has a QWERTY keyboard which means that the keys are laid out in the same manner they would be on a computer keyboard. The keys are not in alphabetical order where the user has to tap the numbers from 0 to 9 to write alphabets (such as A, B, C etc…). This keyboard can be hardware (i.e. physical keys can be there) or software (i.e. a touch screen).

The main feature of smartphones is the internet. The quality which these phones give in accessing the internet is better as compared to ordinary feature phones. These are compatible with the Wi-Fi networks, edge and other modern network platforms as well. Because of these vary features a smartphone is also referred to as a business phone.
