What is Data Transfer RateWritten by Harpreet

Data Transfer Rate is the rate at which data can be transmitted from one device to another. Data Rate is basically commonly used to measure how fast data is transferred from one location to another. Data Rates are often measured in megabits (mbps) or megabytes (MBps) per second. (‘b’ in Mbps means bits and ‘B’ in MBps means bytes). This rate is basically compared to flow of traffic. Data transfer rate is subject to problems as well. It is the amount of data per unit time which can move across input output bus when executing an input output load.
The equivalent values in which a data transfer rate can be mentioned are:
1,024 bits = 1 kilobit (Kb)
8 Kb = 1 kilobyte (KB)
1,024 KB = 1 megabyte (MB)
8 Mb = 1 megabyte (MB)
1,024 MB = 1 gigabyte (GB)
8 Gb = 1 gigabyte (GB)
NOTE: 128 kilobytes and 128 megabytes are equivalent to 1 megabit and 1 gigabit respectively.
Data Transfer Rate is also known as Bit Rate or Data Rate. This rate may also be calculated in terms of hard drive. For e.g. a hard drive may have a maximum data transfer rate of 500 Mbps, while the Internet Service Provider may offer an Internet connection with a maximum data transfer rate of only 2 Mbps.
As the data and programs are becoming larger and larger there is growing need for faster data transfer rates and is becoming more and more important. Many devices are coming with more and more specifications as per the growing needs. Controllers need special attention while purchasing as the data transfer rates are very important for them.
On ethernet local area networks, the data transfer can be as fast as 10 megabits per second. Network switches are planned in such a way that they will be able to transfer data in the terabit range. In telecommunication systems the data transfer was measured in characters or blocks per second. Data transfer time is usually measured in milliseconds in case of some devices such as the microprocessor or RAM and devices such as the hard disk and CD- ROM player.
Thus the Data Transfer rate is helpful in measuring the speed of flow of data and can therefore be calculated as per different devices.
