Hydroxyzine is an antihistamine drug used to cure allergies. Histamine is released in the body during allergic disorders like common cold. This binds to the histamine receptor cells in our body. This drug is available under brand names Atarax and Vistaril. Vistaril is pamoate salt formulation and atarax is hydrochloride as well as dihydrochloride salt formulation. Hydroxyzine hydrochloride is available in the form of tablets, syrups and injections. Vistaril is available as capsules.
Hydroxyzine is absorbed in gastro-intestinal tract and is metabolized by the liver. It starts acting within 15 to 30 minutes of intake and effect is sustained for 4 to 6 hrs. It helps in managing pruritus (itching) caused by allergy.
Hydroxyzine is not helpful to the patients who are sensitive to hyroxyzine or cetrizine. Also females in early pregnancy should avoid its use. Sedative tendencies of hydroxyzine make it helpful in curing anxiety disorders. These are also helpful in curing neurological disorders like psychoneurosis.
Hydroxyzine acts best when taken intramuscularly but it can taken orally also. Overdose may cause confusion and abnormality in behavior. This drug is lovable as it does not cause any dependence but its use is suggested to be avoided among elderly people.
Hydroxyzine is advisable to be taken during night because of sleep-inducing tendency. It is not at all advisable to drive after taking this medicine. People with medical history of breathing problems like asthma and other complications like glaucoma, heart problems, liver problems, seizures and enlarged prostrate should inform physician in advance before going for hydroxyzine treatment.
Drowsiness, blurred vision and headache are some of the side effects that may occur due to hydroxyzine intake. A serious allergic reaction is unlikely but doctor should be consulted immediately in case of itching, rashes, dizziness and difficulty in breathing.
